JAKES – JUNIORS ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE, ETHICS & SPORTSMANSHIP

In 1981, NWTF saw a need to get youth outdoors and began the JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) program. Xtreme JAKES was later added to provide teens with more advanced outdoor opportunities. JAKES Take Aim gives youth the chance to try target shooting, clay target shooting and shotgunning in a safe, fun environment.

JAKES - The JAKES program’s purpose is dedicated to informing, educating and involving America’s youth (Ages 12 and under) in Wildlife Conservation and wise stewardship of our natural resources.

EXTREME JAKES – The Extreme JAKES Program is for teens between the ages of 13 – 17. The program provides advanced, age-appropriate outdoor opportunities and challenges that match a teenager’s abilities and experiences.

JAKES Take Aim -  The JAKES Take Aim program presents opportunities for youth ages 17 and younger to try target shooting, clay target shooting and shotgunning in a safe, fun environment.

NWTF state chapters in the lower 48 states have a fully equipped airgun trailer to use during local JAKES and youth events. The trailer contains everything needed to set up an indoor or outdoor airgun range. The State NWTF of Ohio has three JAKES Take Aim Trailers.

Youth Memberships- You’re never too young to become a conservationist and learn how hunters and shooters play a vital role in wildlife conservation. For $10 a year, your child will receive a year subscription to JAKES Country magazine (4 issues), a chance to win a hunt of a lifetime, a membership card and membership

SCHOLARSHIPS

Our chapter presents two scholarships each year in the amount of $500 each to two high school seniors that are enrolled in high schools in Lawrence County.

The first scholarship is named is named “In Loving Memory of Levon Kingrey” who was one of the first avid turkey hunters in Lawrence County who harvested a turkey in our county many years ago.  This scholarship was started in his memory by his son, and long-time committee member, past State NWTF Board member and past chapter president, Larry Kingrey.

The second scholarship is named “In Loving Memory of Fred Pernestti” who was one of our chapters first Wheelin’ Sportsmen members who participated in our fall hunt each year. This scholarship was started in his memory by his son, and long-time Committee member, current Banquet Chairman and Chapter President Larry Pernestti and his mother Phyllis Pernestti.

Both Scholarships are announced for applicants in late November each year and are given to each high school Guidance Counselor to distribute.  The application deadline for these scholarships is January 1st every year so that the Scholarship Committee may review and score them to determine the two winners.  The winners will be announced and one winner’s scholarship packet will be forwarded to the Ohio State NWTF Board to be reviewed and to be eligible for the $1,000 state scholarship given out in February each year. The State $1,000 winner will then be forwarded to Edgefield, SC and eligible for National Scholarship award for $10,000 to be awarded in May.

Any high school senior that is enrolled and lives in Lawrence County Ohio must ask your Guidance Counselor for details on the NWTF Local Chapter Scholarship Application.

All applications must be submitted to South Hills Chapter Scholarship Committee member listed on the application. The appropriate address to be mailed will be included in the scholarship packet.
